Sometimes Bone Grafting Is Needed.
After a tooth is lost, the jawbone naturally begins to shrink because it is no longer stimulated by the tooth root. In most cases, a bone graft is recommended to rebuild the area and provide a strong foundation for a dental implant. Not every patient needs bone grafting, but when it is recommended, it helps improve the long-term success of implant treatment.
Healing Takes Time.
Dental implants are completed over several months because your jawbone needs time to naturally bond with the implant. This healing process creates the strong foundation that allows implants to function like natural teeth. Depending on your individual case, temporary replacement teeth may be available while healing occurs.
Need maintenance on an existing implant?
We're happy to evaluate existing implant restorations completed by another provider. Whenever possible, it's best to first contact the dentist or surgeon who originally placed the implant, as they are most familiar with your treatment. We understand that isn't always possible. Implant systems and components can vary, so while we'll always do our best to help, some implants may have limitations that affect the maintenance or repairs we can safely perform. We'll explain your options and recommendations before any treatment begins.
Am I a candidate for a dental implant?
Many healthy adults with one or more missing teeth are good candidates for dental implants. During your consultation, Dr. Matos will evaluate your oral health, bone support, and overall goals to determine whether an implant is the right option for you.
Does getting an implant hurt?
Most patients are pleasantly surprised by how comfortable the procedure is. The implant is placed under local anesthesia by our oral surgery team, and sedation options are available when appropriate. Most patients experience only mild discomfort afterward, which is typically manageable with medication and improves within a few days.
How long does the process take?
The complete implant process usually takes several months. After the implant is placed, the jawbone needs time to heal and bond with the implant before the final crown is made. The exact timeline depends on your individual treatment plan and whether additional procedures, such as bone grafting, are needed.
Will I need a bone graft?
Not every patient does. If the jawbone has lost too much volume after a tooth is removed, a bone graft may be recommended to provide a stable foundation for the implant. Dr. Matos and our oral surgery team will determine whether this is necessary during your evaluation.
Can an implant be placed the same day a tooth is removed?
In some cases, yes. Depending on the condition of the tooth, surrounding bone, and presence of infection, an implant may be placed immediately after an extraction. However, most patients benefit from allowing the area to heal first. Your surgeon will determine the safest and most predictable approach for your specific case.
How long do implants last?
With proper home care and regular dental visits, dental implants can last for many years and are often a lifelong solution. Like natural teeth, they require routine maintenance and healthy gums to remain successful.

Are implants better than bridges?
Both are excellent treatment options, and the best choice depends on your individual situation. Dental implants replace the missing tooth without affecting neighboring teeth, while bridges are often completed more quickly and may be appropriate in certain cases. Dr. Matos will explain the advantages and limitations of each option so you can make an informed decision together.
